12/09/2006 Casini

Morocco has been elected president of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly, which held its inaugural session on 10-11 September in Amman. The president of the House of Representatives Abdelwahed Radi, who represented Morocco, was unanimously chosen by the participating parliamentary delegations. The vice-presidencies were entrusted to Egypt, Palestine, Greece, and France.

In his opening speech, Inter-Parliamentary Union President Pier Ferdinando Casini said, "11 September here in Amman supports dialogue and peace and not the 11 September of death and destruction."

The Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly institution will be based in Malta and include 25 member states. It will consist of a political co-operation and security committee presided over by Jordan, as well as an economic, social and environmental co-operation committee presided over by Croatia, and a dialogue between civilisations and human rights committee presided over by Italy.
